Now that same day two of them were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem. They were talking with each other about everything that had happened. As they talked and discussed these things with each other, Jesus himself came up and walked along with them; but they were kept from recognizing him. LUKE 24:13-16

I think of all of the resurrection appearances of Jesus, this one is my favorite. Two dejected disciples walking home from Jerusalem - downcast. They had placed all of their hope in Jesus and now he’s dead and gone. The women have come up with some crazy story about seeing him, but they’re not buying it. As they walk and talk about their discouragement and grief, Jesus joins them on the road. What makes this such a great story is the possibility that Jesus may be walking with me even though I’m disheartened and depressed and don’t even recognize his presence. Just this prospect makes me want to lift my head from the road and look around. He’s not far from anyone of us, even when we are unaware.
