When he was at the table with them, he took bread, gave thanks, broke it and began to give it to them. Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him, and he disappeared from their sight. They asked each other, "Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?" Luke 24:30-32

It is in the breaking of the bread that the disciples recognize Jesus. One of the things that friends always do is eat together. Once any relationship moves beyond strictly business it involves food and drink. “Let’s get lunch sometime” or “how about a cup of coffee” are typical expressions of friendship. So it is no accident the symbols of our faith are found in a meal that we share together. It doesn’t matter that the amount of food is small, the point is that Jesus is the host and we are all his family with our feet under his table. This Sunday as part of our worship we will gather around the Lord’s Table. My prayer is that we will recognize him in the breaking of the Bread.

Peace (Agnus Dei)/A Communion Blessing From St. Joseph's Square
Rich Mullins

Though we're strangers, still I love you.
I love you more than your mask.
And you know you have to trust this to be true.
And I know that's much to ask.
But lay down you fears. Come and join this feast.
He has called us here, you and me.

So may peace rain down from Heaven
Like little pieces of the sky.
Little keepers of the promise
Falling on these souls the drought has dried.
In His blood and in His body.
In this bread and in this wine
Peace to you. Peace of Christ to you.

And though I love you, still we're strangers.
Prisoners in these lonely hearts.
And though our blindness separates us.
Still his light shines in the dark.
And His outstretched arms are still strong enough to reach
Behind these briston bars to set us free.

So may peace rain down from Heaven
Like little pieces of the sky.
Little keepers of the promise
Falling on these souls the drought has dried.
In His blood and in His body.
In this bread and in this wine
Peace to you. Peace of Christ to you.
