How Deep Is Deep?

Was it deep enough for the chief priests and the elders, the teachers of the law and the whole Sanhedrin? What about Pilate, the prisoner named Barabbas or the angry crowd stirred up by the chief priests? Was it deep enough for them? Don’t forget the soldiers, the whole company of soldiers. What about the one who struck him on the head with a staff or the one who spat on him?

Was it deep enough?

You can’t forget the man from Cyrene, Simon, the one who was forced to carry the cross. And what about his two sons, Alexander and Rufus?….

The two robbers?….

And then there were those that had passed by to hurl insults. Deep enough?

One man filled a sponge with wine vinegar and offers it to Jesus to drink. From the distance a group of women which also included Mary Magdalene were watching the horrific event unfold.

How deep is deep?

Was it deep enough?

How Deep the Father’s Love For Us

How deep the Father’s love for us,
How vast beyond all measure
That He should give His only Son
To make a wretch His treasure
How great the pain of searing loss,
The Father turns His face away
As wounds which mar the chosen One,
Bring many sons to glory

Behold the Man upon a cross,
My sin upon His shoulders
Ashamed I hear my mocking voice,
Call out among the scoffers
It was my sin that held Him there
Until it was accomplished
His dying breath has brought me life
I know that it is finished

I will not boast in anything
No gifts, no power, no wisdom
But I will boast in Jesus Christ
His death and resurrection
Why should I gain from His reward?
I cannot give an answer
But this I know with all my heart
His wounds have paid my ranson.

Yet in the midst of anguish,
in the ache of hopelessness,
and in the loneliness of our most profound hurting,
we reach out.
Out of desperation,
we stretch our hands toward our heavenly Father,
who embraces us
and looks upon us with a love that surpasses understanding.
For there is no circumstance too grave,
nor hole too deep,
that God’s love is not deeper still.

How deep is deep?
But this I know with all my heart, that His love was deep enough.
