James 1
By Pastor Libby
Persevere
“Blessed is the man who perseveres under trial, because when he has stood the test, he will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love him.” (v. 12)
When my sons were little they loved to hear a song by Kenny Rogers that talks about how a young boy is playing baseball by himself. He throws the ball up in the air with the intention of hitting it with his bat and he misses. Once again he throws the ball up, swings, and catches air. For the last time he throws the ball up into the air and its strike three, he’s out. The song ends with the little boy saying, “I didn’t even know I could pitch that good!”
When I read James chapter one I am caught by the idea that we are to find joy in trials and temptations. Instead of whining, and dying, James shares that as these things intersect with our Christian walk we are to consider them a blessing rather than a curse. When temptation to sin or difficulties come our way, as Christians we are to acknowledge the fact that the testing of our faith develops perseverance. The definition of perseverance is: a steady persistence in a course of action, a purpose, a state, etc., especially in spite of difficulties, obstacles, or discouragement. So as Christians when we persevere we become, “…mature and complete, not lacking anything.” (v.4)
What temptations and trials are you facing? What would it take for you today to claim victory over them? Don’t give up, persevere! Will you, like the little boy in the song, understand the good or joy to be found amongst the rubble of defeat and tough times.
