Matthew 6

Don’t Worry…Trust Jesus

In 1988 Bobby McFerrin came out with a hit song that shot up the charts and eventually won the best song of the year at the Grammy’s.  Do you remember it?  It was called, “Don’t Worry, Be Happy.”  Pardon my pun but the song struck a chord with everyone.   Worry doesn’t seem to have a monopoly on only the poor, a certain gender, a certain age group, or difficult economic times.

Here in Matthew 6, beginning at verse 25, Jesus specifically addresses this all too human dilemma.  He tells us to not worry about our basic necessities of life, but to “seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you…” (v. 33)

The song McFerrin sang addressed a common human problem, but it didn’t address a workable solution.  To tell someone to just “get happy” is like telling a three year old to go out and find a job and fend for themselves.  Jesus here in Matthew provides some guidance.

When we worry about something we need to realize that the act of worrying doesn’t accomplish anything productive.  We need to realize that worrying can make us physically and mentally sick.  It’s not good for us.  We need to realize that as we focus on worrying rather than God we are taking back from him our trust and the peace that only his love can provide.

You may be reading this and saying to yourself, “yeah…right, but it’s not that easy, you don’t realize what I am going through right now!”  Your right, I don’t know what you are going through, but God does.  I Peter 5:7 says this, “Cast all your anxiety on Him because he cares for you.”

Don’t let the joy of today be lost in the worries of tomorrow.  Commit your worries to God in prayer and in thanksgiving.

(For the fun of it, here is a link to the 1988 hit “Don’t Worry, Be Happy,” insert “Trust Jesus” when appropriate! – Yup that’s Robin Williams in the Music Video)
