I Corinthians 8

“I’ve Been Watching You.”
“Be careful that the exercise of your freedom does not become a stumbling block to the weak.” (v.9)
If the Christian Music station isn’t on at our house the Country Music station is. There is one song in particular that I thought about when I was reading this scripture. The title is “I’ve Been Watching You” and it talks about how a four year old wants to be just like his dad. When the dad says a “four letter word” the child repeats it when his orange drink falls to his lap. The dad comes to the realization that through good and bad his son is taking his cues from him.
Now I do hope and pray that my listening to country music doesn’t cause someone else to stumble. Realize I am not endorsing country. There is a lot of disgusting country songs out there, but this song brings home to me that children especially are weak and we need to be diligent in our freedoms as adults that those “freedoms” don’t hurt our youth.
Dad how are you treating your wife? Your sons and daughters are looking on and forming their future interactions with the opposite sex. Wives how are you treating your husband? Parents what movies and entertainment are you allowing into your home? What morals are you letting Hollywood teach rather than you?
I’m not saying that we need to be paranoid with someone always watching us, but we need to be careful. In Paul’s day it was eating food sacrificed to idols, or eating in an idol’s temple. Nothing in errantly sinful about it, but seen and misinterpreted by a child or a new believer,it could create fissures in their faith and places for temptation. It is a grey area for a mature Christian to find themselves in, but as we love as Christ loves, our freedoms, desires, whatever you want to name it, should become second place to ensuring, a place for others in the Family of God.
