Luke Chapter 24

By Pastor Chris

The Road

I cannot guess at how many miles Jesus and his disciples walked together.
There were too many.
I cannot guess how many important conversations Jesus and his disciples had together.
They were too frequent.
I cannot imagine how many times Jesus and his disciples had eaten together.
There were too many times.

In Luke Chapter 24:13-32 we find two disciples journeying on the road to Emmaus when they encounter a fellow traveler who was apparently unaware of all that had been going on in Jerusalem.  So, they walk and they talk.  These two disciples get the chance to share with this stranger all about Jesus.

The things they had witnessed;
the hopes they had for him;
the disappointment in his death.

In rebuttal the traveler takes the opportunity to share all about The Christ from the beginning of scripture up to the place they found themselves that day.  As they come to the village the stranger looks to be traveling on, so they invite him in for dinner.  While at the table this stranger stuns his traveling companions by blessing the meal while he breaks the bread their eyes are opened and they recognize him to be Jesus.  These two disciples were privileged enough to have one last journey in person with Jesus.

We have a God who wishes to journey with us.  Like the disciples there are times where He is unrecognizable to us.  There are times when we feel like these disciples and are confused, alone.  Just as these two disciples did, there are times when we need to hear the whole story again, as if it were the first time.  In those times, take comfort, Jesus is near.
